The first time I heard “Strawberry Roan,” by Garth Brooks, it began to haunt me. If you google it, it might come up as “The Cowboy Song”. It tells the story of a cowhand, Bonner, and his dedicated partner and horse, Gunney. No one else on You Tube does it like Garth, he is a master story teller isn’t he? The melody of the tune takes you back to the days when cows were pushed, nights were cold and at least in Bonner and Gunney’s case, they couldn’t outrun the dust storm that took their lives. It also tells of the bond between a working’ man and his horse. Just one of those songs that reaches out and drags the tears from your eyes. If you ever get the chance have a listen to the tune. It is one of my favorites and the inspiration of this popular painting.
The original work, by Teresa Wade, resides in the collection of Ms. Jennifer Putnam of Issaquah, Washington; with permission, archival quality giclée prints are available on heavy watercolor paper in a variety of standard sizes.
