I love the contrast of this piece and the color detail amongst the black wooly. A local fly fisherman brought me this fly, his favorite, and asked that I paint it for him. After giving some thought to the challenge of setting off a wet, black fly and do it justice, this image was born. The red willow the streamer is hooked on is common to the river banks of the Salmon, Idaho area and seemed fitting to orient where the trout fisherman was from. Envisioning him getting the fly caught in the brush on his first cast of the year brought to mind a chuckle and the painting’s whimsical title, “First Cast”.
The original work, by Teresa Wade, has been sold; with permission, archival quality giclée prints are available on heavy watercolor paper in a variety of standard sizes.
